Hurtful words. Hostile silence. Moments of sudden anger. Years of dull agony. Manipulative tears. Vengeful behavior. Disagreements at the drop of a hat. A painful distance widening every single day.
Bitter experience teaches us that sooner or later conflicts take place in our relationships, especially relationships within our families. For this reason, how we deal with conflict will have a huge impact on the character of our lives. Will we constantly contribute to conflict, and then cause further hurt by flailing around aimlessly in faulty attempts to fix broken relationships? Or will we know not only how to avoid unnecessary conflicts, but also the right manner of pursing resolution when troubles enter our relationships?
Beginning March 6th, this Sunday School class will draw from Peacemaking for Families by Ken Sande to examine conflict from the perspective of the Bible, God's authoritative Word. Included in our study will be an examination of the causes of conflict, the role of confession and confrontation in bringing peace to relationships, and the proper way to appeal to others lovingly and persuasively in the midst of disagreement. Throughout all our topics, we will see how true peacemaking can only come through Jesus Christ and the power of His Good News. We'll note the ways that conflict actually creates an opportunity to honor and glorify God. And we'll learn that God's free gift of grace means that it's never too late to start living as a peacemaker, even if we've been at odds with others for many years.
While the material in this class will be of help in all types of situations, special emphasis will be on applying the teaching of the Bible to relationships within the family--between spouses, among adults in the extended family, and with children. Please join us for this extremely practical study!
Also offered this spring:
In this class, we will study the book of Nehemiah, a historical narrative of the work of one man in a leadership position, presiding over the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem, the reaffirmation of the covenant, and the judicious reform of community abuses. Through this example, we are given examples of godly leadership through submission and steadfast determination.
Covenant Church's 2008 Missions Conference
Covnenant's 2008 Missions Conference was a two day event held on April 26th and 27th in which we heard from a couple of the OPC's missionaries on the theme "God's Word Is Not Chained."
(See the section below for a list of the lessons from this years Missions Conference)
This year we heard from Rev. Ben Westerveld (currently serving in Quebec City) and Rev. Jonathan Falk (a missionary who's served in Eritrea).
Rev. Bernard Westerveld pastors the St-Marc Reformed Church in Quebec City, where he has served since 2001. This congregation is part of the Reformed Church of Quebec, and receives support from the Committee on Foreign Missions of the OPC.
He describes his mission field by saying "Without a doubt, too few Quebecers have heard the truth of the Word of God. Too few have heard of the hope of redemption through grace by faith alone. Many live with the deceptions of the Church of Rome or with popular media misconceptions and caricatures.
There is a crying need for ambassadors of Jesus Christ to proclaim the gospel in the French language." To that end, Rev. Westerveld has led his congregation in a number of creative and strategic outreach initiatives to extend the Gospel into the particular context where God has placed him.
Rev. Jonathan Falk served in Eritrea as a missionary of the OPC from 2002 until 2007, laboring along with the Rev. Dr. Brian Wingard in training men for Gospel ministry within the Mehrete Yesus Evangelical Presbyterian Church.
Last spring, while Dr. Wingard was on furlough, the congregation in Asmara was arrested following a worship service, and the Falks were expelled from the country; neither they nor the Wingards have yet been permitted to return.
This continues a pattern of oppressive behavior by the Eritrean government against biblical Christianity; although the members of the Asmara church were eventually released, it is estimated that there are more than 2000 Christians now being held in prison for the name of Christ. As a result of these experiences, Rev. Falk has seen firsthand the power of the Gospel even in a hostile environment.
We'd like to thank everyone who was able to join us for this time of learning about the Lord's work in these various parts of the world, as well as the great time of fellowship and prayer together with our brothers and sisters in Christ.
